Congratulations to the Distribution & Logistical Services Team
Congratulations to the Distribution & Logistical Services Team who won the 2025 ULSCA Sustainability Award for the FM Yard Moving Sale X Surplus Sales! This initiative stood out due to its substantial waste reduction and resource efficiency and use of social media to grow your digital presence and promote reusability. Read more about some exciting updates from their team.
Over Summer 2025, Surplus Sales successfully launched the new Collections program, creating a more proactive and sustainable way for departments to manage excess property. Through strong departmental engagement and buy-in, we have reshaped how surplus is viewed across campus from a storage challenge to a strategic resource that supports sustainability, compliance, and cost recovery. We are grateful for the collaboration from our Executive Residential Operations team and broader campus community.
This initiative was developed in collaboration with the University’s Process Innovation Team, helping streamline workflows and improve tracking of surplus assets. Our efforts have gained recognition beyond UCSB: the Surplus Sales team has joined the University Logistics and Supply Chain Association (ULSCA) and will present on these improvements at their 2025 conference. We also shared our process updates at the Waste & Procurement CSC Subcommittee meeting, contributing to UC-wide conversations about responsible reuse and waste reduction.
As we move into Fall Quarter, we invite departments to learn more about the Collections program and how it can support their needs. Together, we are showcasing that surplus can be both sustainable and strategic.
Additionally, Materiel & Logistics was chosen to showcase their procurement & logistics process improvement at the 2025 Process Paradise. This virtual conference is designed to show how the Lean Six Sigma journey has transformed your approach to problem-solving, efficiency, or operational excellence at UC Santa Barbara. This group was able to demonstrate how using current technology like Google Sheets, and engaging obstacles as a team, created success within their department and yielded resounding results.
