From the Desk of Willie Brown V7N5

I’d like to start this issue with my sincere gratitude. The outpouring of support following the loss of our colleague and friend Jesus Beltran has been deeply moving. The memorial BBQ hosted at DLS was a great success, and I’m proud of how we came together to honor his memory, serving over 370 meals and raising more than $7,600 for his family. Whether you attended the BBQ, donated, or honored his memory in your own way, your care made all the difference.
Spring quarter is always one of the busiest times at UC Santa Barbara, and this year is no exception. Amid all the activity, I’m pleased to share a major milestone. On April 10, the California Coastal Commission approved the project plans for our next student housing development, San Benito. Construction is underway, starting with utility work and site preparation, and will deliver 2,224 new beds by Fall 2027. We recognize construction will impact access to areas around San Clemente Villages and Stadium Road. Thank you for your flexibility and patience as we move forward with this important project.
I look forward to seeing you at our next Town Hall on Tuesday, April 29, where we’ll celebrate service milestones and share more updates, including on both San Benito and East Campus student housing developments and the results from the staff engagement survey. Additionally, please mark your calendar for the Arts & Culture Fest on Friday, May 16, where you can show off your artistic talents as a chalk, paint, or musical artist. This event, hosted by the Arts & Culture Committee, is a great way to connect with colleagues outside of your typical workday.
Thank you for all you do during this fast-paced season for our students, our community, and each other.
Willie
